Abstract

As a receptive skill, listening demands the students to take in and understand English input. Listening is considered to be more difficult than reading since students frequently recognize the written word faster than they understand the spoken word. Unfortunately, students frequently overlook this aspect of learning. This research was conducted to analyze students’ obstacles in listening skills during classroom session. This research was carried out through a case study. It was conducted in one class of tenth-grade students of MIPA 3 of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandarlampung. The data were gained through questionnaires and interviews. The data were analyzed by data collection, data disassemble, data reassembly, data interpreting, and conclusion. The research findings show that grade 10 students had several obstacles in listening skills, including Insufficient knowledge of vocabulary; a speaker presenting material too quickly and using a foreign accent; students' inadequate knowledge of accent, intonation, and speaking style. Speakers convey material quickly and use difficult-to-understand accents, making it difficult for students to assimilate the implied words. Teachers should speak in an accent that is easy for students to understand and should not rush when explaining the material. Finally, students' lack of knowledge of accents, speaking styles, and intonations is also an obstacle to listening comprehension, as they are not accustomed to hearing foreign accents.
