Abstract

The use of media can encourage students to learn English more interestingly, students feel less motivated to learn English just by textbook in the classroom, instead students feel more interested in learn English by using English movies. This research was conducted to investigate students’ perceptions in learning English through movies and students’ obstacles in learning English through movies. This research was carried out through a case study. It was conducted in one class of eleventh grade students of MIPA 4 of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandarlampung. The data were gained through questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed by data collection, data disassemble, data reasseemble, data interpreting and conclusion. The research findings show that students have a positive perceptions toward learning English through movies. Students obtained numerous beneficial effects by learning English through watching English movies, students are able to fix and develop their pronunciation skill, students can know the proper way to pronouce English words correctly and enhance their vocabulary mastery, students are also interested to following the lesson of English class if the material which the teacher uses is English movie, English movies can assist students to be familiar with basic conversation and expression in the movie that they can use to start making a conversation in their daily life. Meanwhile, students also face some obstacles in the process of learning English through movies such as; students feel difficult when watch movies where the speakers talk really fast, students feel complicated when they find uncommon words that they do not know in the movies, students also feel hard to differenciate the words which have the same pronounciation. In addition, another obstacles that students have is some of them are lacking of vocabulary and students find it difficult when they watch movies that contain British accent because it sounds unclear and unfamiliar for them.
