Abstract

ABSTRACT The Portrayal of Dissociative Amnesia as seen in the Main Character on Momento Movie by Christopher Nolan (2000) Refinda Anisa 17111047 This research discuss a movie directed by Christopher Nolan entitled Memento Movie. This Movie tells the story about the Main Character Leonard Shelby who is suffering an illness, which is Dissociative amnesia after he got an injury on his head when he wants to safe his wife from the incident. In the movie, the author described the portrayal of dissociative amnesia in society, and it is shown by the main character Leonard Shelby that give his struggle to complete the mystery of his wife's death because he loose his short term memory after the accident before his wife passed away. In this study, the writer use the descriptive qualitative method to describe the phenomena inside the movie and it supported by the data that had been collected by the movie as the primary data. The main data are collected by the writer in form of picture in every scene that shows the case of dissociative amnesia that suffered by the main character. This thesis applies psychological criticism by Sigmund Freud, Cinematography, and dissociative amnesia theory in order to describe the portrayal of dissociative amnesia from Memento movie. The result of this paper shown that the main character Leonard Shelby in Memento Movie by Christopher Nolan clearly identified as the person who suffering dissociative amnesia. The movie gives clear portrayal about the symptoms of dissociative amnesia that can be seen from the scenes in the movie such from his daily activities and behavior.
