Abstract

The thesis explores obsession for perfection experienced by Howard Hughes in the Aviator movie. Obsession for perfection is common behavior that may be suffered by people. In this case, Howard experienced obsession for perfection toward his career that everything must be perfect. The obsession was presented in a very subtle way that encourages the writer to do more analysis toward Howard’s behavior. This thesis aims to describe some indicators of obsession for perfection reflected in The Aviator and uncover the impact it causes. This research applied an in-depth qualitative narrative analysis method which examines the story elements from dialogue and picture from capture scene in the movie. This research used psychoanalytic theory as the approach and later will divided into two sub discussions, which are the reflection of obsession for perfection and the effects of obsession for perfection. The result of this study showed that there are six indicator of showing Obsession for Perfection experienced by Howard Hughes, which are; target oriented, highly dependent on result, meticulous behavior, do not allow any mistakes, being defensive when receiving feedback, and unable to accept and celebrate any success. These six findings impacted him to have some effects of suffering obsession for perfection, which are losing much money and suffering mental disorder
