Abstract

Red Queen novel was written by Victoria Aveyard and published in 2015. This novel delineates the story of Mare Barrow, a Red who lived in poverty. The story focuses on the life of people in a Kingdom of Norta. As the story progresses, Mare meets other characters that change her life as well as her personality. Finally, the character of Mare Barrow, Cal (Tiberias the 7th), and Maven Calore became the focus of this research. This research was descriptive qualitative study. The focus of the research is the three main characters' characterization in the Red Queen novel. This research applied a structuralism approach which focuses on analyzing the intrinsic elements of the novel. The theory of character and characterization by Janet Burroway. The data are obtained from the dialogues and narrations representing the appearance, speech, thought, and action that delineate main characters’ characterization. The writer found out that Mare Barrow was the only character that dominantly appears to be described in various ways of characterization. Mare Barrow was delineated as the one who is characterized as a criminal and a good person. For Cal and Maven Calore, both characterizations are mostly described by speech and action
