Abstract

This research discusses a novel written by Susan Vaught entitled “Freaks Like Us”. The novel tells a story about Jason Milwaukee who was bullied since he was eight and at that moment his parents got divorced. It makes him got a little attention and affection from his parents. Thus, he was anxious about everything that interfere his daily life. From that time, Jason begins to see and hear things that do not exist in the external world. Jason suffers hallucinations until he was seventeen years old. In this novel, the writer wants to analyze the main character’s hallucination and the symptoms of hallucination on Jason character. In this research, the writer applies the descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from narrations inside the novel and dialogues from the character. The psychological approach is used in this thesis since this thesis analyzes someone’s behavior. This thesis applies Veague’s theory about hallucination to find out the types of hallucination on the main character and Garralda’s theory about the symptoms of hallucination in adolescents portrayed on the main character in the Freaks Like Us novel. The result of the analysis shows the symptoms of hallucination describe in Jason’s character namely anxiety, depression, persecutory delusion/suspicious thought, aggresive behavior and obsessional/intrusive thought. Jason’s character suffers all types of hallucination are including auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory hallucinations. His hallucination makes Jason cannot distinguish between real and unreal
