Abstract

This research discusses a novel written by Carmen Maria Machado entitled In the dream house. This novel tells the story of Machado as the main character who identified as the part of queer people, having the relationship as the lesbian in that novel. However, in that novel the author tells about her experiences during her relationship with her ex-girlfriend, in that novel, Machado tells the reader about the psychological abuse that faced by her when she got in a relationship with her ex-girlfriend in the past. In the novel, the author described about portrayal of queer relationship and the case of psychological abuse that suffered by the main character. This thesis has one research question: How is psychological abuse in the queer relationship portrayed in the novel in the dream house by Machado’s In this study, the writer employed descriptive qualitative methods to describe the phenomena inside the novel by Machado as the data primary source. The data are in the form of narration and dialogue taken by the novel. This thesis applies a psychological approach to describe the portrayal of psychological abuse of queer relationship in the dream house novel. This thesis use gender trouble theory by Butler to identified the sexual orientation of the main character as the lesbian inside the novel. This paper shows that the main character in the dream house by Carmen Maria Machado is clearly identified as lesbian and get the psychological abuse from her relationship. From the daily activities and the behavior of her ex-girlfriend, the main character of this novel suffered psychological abuse during her relationship.
