Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe social class as reflected in the Sinclair Family in the novel we were liars. We were liars tells about fact, this situation is ironic. The Sinclair family is so wealthy, yet so broken , harris sinclair succeeded in the role of a provider,as his wealth has kept their family together all these years but he ultimately fails to raise his daughters to take care of themselves. They always fight over each others to seize the inheritance because they still depend on their parents and they try to maintain their social status in society. To overcome the problem structurally,this research use social class theory which was introduce by Alex Thio, to get an overview of the social situation in literary work the writer use sociology of literature and also this research uses elements of novel. The data are taken from the selected sentences,dialogues and quotations and this research will use qualitative research to depict clearly about the problem qualitative research is conducted to explain and analyze phenomena, events, social dynamics, attitudes of belief, and the perception of a person or group of something. The result of this analysis show the Sinclair family is a prominent american Family it is indicated by their social status as upper class, this research represents the common issue about social class in the society as the final finding social class in We Were Liars novel, E.lockhart, she wants to tell how social class is reflected in the novel We Were Liars consist of upper middle , and lower class based on Sinclair family , how as a upper class have a high position in society, futhermore E.lockhart also discribes how social class can affect life chance and life style
