Abstract

The research is entitled Histrionic Personality Disorder Analysis of Harley Quinn Character in Suicide Squad Movie (2016). Literary works often reflects how human in reality can suffer from certain kind of mental disorder. From psychological perspective, an author may mirror how Histrionic Personality Disorder appear to a person in real life and later develop it to be implemented in his works. This study aims to reveal how Histrionic Personality Disorder is described through the protagonist in Suicide Squad movie, taking the data from dialogues and visual representations within Harley Quinn in the movie Suicide Squad. The research is done by applying the arranged symptom of Histrionic Personality Disorder as coined by American Psychiatrist Association. APA suggested that a person can be categorized as suffering from Histrionic Personality Disorder if he or she exhibit at least five from a total of seven symptoms. The analysis uses the dialogues of the characters and visual representations such as body language and facial expression as its main data of study, then finding the contextual similarity to APA’s Histrionic Personality Disorder. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data sourced from library research, such as journal, articles, and other published works. The result of the study shows that Harley Quinn, one of the main protagonists in Ayer’s Suicide Squad suffered from Histrionic Personality Disorder as she exhibits six symptoms coined by APA. In arranging this study, the writer also applies cinematographic aspects such as camera angle and types of camera shot to provide additional technique in analyzing data presented in movie to determine Harley’s HPD.
