Abstract

The Author’s View on Polynesian Life as seen in Melville’s Typee a Peep at Polynesian Life NOVIANA 14111214P Typee a Peep at Polynesian Life is one of the literary work by Herman Melville that talk about the sailor that spends his time living with Polynesian people. This research aimed to describe the Author’s view as his experience on Polynesian life. Before describing the Author’s View, the writer analyzes the author’s Background and experience’s. Descriptive qualitative method was used as the method of this research because the data of this research was presented in the form of dialogue and narration, which the data sources was taken from novel Typee a peep at polynesian life by Herman Melville and Historical guide to Herman Melville by Giles Gunn. In order to answer the research question, The writer used Genetic Structuralism by Lucien Goldmann to analyze the data since this theory concerned to analyze and find the world view of the author toward his novel. The results of this research are first, there is no Cannibalism practice in polynesian. Second, behavior of Polynesian people are kind and polite. They are not barbarians or even cannibal. Polynesian daily activies is not horrorable, their life not savage and wild. The ritual of Polynesian life is same with other people, they have religion and their ritual is the way to worship Gods. Next, Polynesian is primitive but they are religious, They have religion and rule. Third, Melville’s view through the setting is the condition place in Nukuheva is not really beautiful, however the atmosphere is good. The environment in Polynesian Life is safe and there is no wild and savage people. Forth, Melville’s view through the theme is they are not as mentioned by the prejudices of American people.
