Abstract

The Representation of Chicano Masculinity in Alberto Urrea’s The House of Broken Angels (2018) Gusti Nyoman Adiatma Wiguna 18111016 The spread of migration from Mexico to United States, from those migration created term called Chicano, means for Mexican that lives in the United States of America, or simply called Mexican American. Encourage the birth of Chicano masculinity which significantly oppressed the domestic roles of women in Chicano society. As the main character Big Angel is the father of a Chicano family accompanied by a wife Perla, amazed by Caucasians for his glorious glory, Alberto Urrea as the writer creates and describes started from a funeral full of values and characters. Thus, this study aims to analyze the representation of Chicano masculinity in Alberto Urrea’s The House of Broken Angels (2018). To analyze that, this study used the representation theory and Chicano masculinity which helpful to find the representation of masculinity in the novel. This study used Bacca Zinn theory to delineate Chicano masculinity and Stuart Hall’s representation theories. Further, this study is typical descriptive qualitative research by using library research method. Using novel as the data source, also using for data are narrations from the novel, dialogues from the novel The House of Broken Angels (2018). To conduct the analysis, descriptive qualitative method is used. It is because this research is considered as textual analysis research. At the end of this study, The House of Broken Angels (2018) by Luis Alberto Urrea can be also concluded that this novel clearly represents Chicano masculinity in the form of machismo, Chicano man sexual life, and patriarchal-authoritarian. The issue of Chicano masculinity also could be seen through the Chicano men who had certain attributes to traditional Mexican men. It could be seen in the Big Angel character.
