Abstract

This research aimed to describe code switching who used by the Teacher especially the types to contribute to the interaction in conversation in the classroom. Code switching is a phenomenon that exists in bilingual or multilingual societies like in Indonesia where the speaker used more than one language to communications. Thus, related to code switching, the writer through this research examined the types of code switching used by teacher in the classroom at Wellington School Bandar Lampung. In conducting the research, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and using Poplack’s theory (2000) of code switching types. The subject of this study were 1 English teacher in Wellington School Bandar Lampung, take on elementary III class. In collecting the data the researcher used observation was done by recording the teacher’s utterances during teaching using a video recorder to see in what condition the teachers employed code switching. The result of the research, the writer found that are three types of code switching used by teacher in the classroom. The findings of this research presents that were 43 cases of code switching used by teacher in English classroom. The most common type which occurred in the teacher’s utterance is Tag switching with 17 data, the second common type which occurred in the teacher’s utterance is inter-sentential switching with 15 data. And the least common type occurred in the teacher’s utterance is intra-sentential switching with 11 data.
