Abstract

each other by expressing ideas and opinions on various matters. By using language in communicating, people can be creative in expressing opinions and criticisms. Language itself is associated with females and males, which belong to gender. There is a close relationship between language and gender in communication, especially in social media Instagram, because in this current era, Instagram is one of the most popular networking sites in society, and a part of CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication). Instagram connects people around the world. Instagram allows people to post photos, videos, leave comments in the comments section, and share memes. Many people, females, and males are interested in memes. This study aims to analyze the comments from males and females in the 9gag account on Instagram. This study will fill the research gap on the sociolinguistic approach toward language style use on social media in communication on Instagram using the theory proposed by Lakoff and supported by general communication in internet CMC. Based on Lakoff's theory, she mentions women's language features that differentiate female language styles in communication. Two memes from 9GAG were chosen for analyzing which have gender issues on it, intended to see the reaction from males and females towards the meme as funny content, and 50 comments from males and 50 comments from females chosen as the data. The result of the analysis, the writer concludes that’s why this theory is called a language feature that is used by females, and it’s undeniable that it can also be used by males but with an amount less than what women usually use. Females and males have different characteristics in social media conversation. Therefore, what Lakoff referred as the female language feature as a parameter applies to this particular study
