Abstract

In this thesis, the writer discusses a novel by Nicholas Spark entitled Safe Haven. This novel tells the story of a husband and wife named Kevin and Katie. Katie, the wife, began to feel uncomfortable living with her husband because of the domestic violence Kevin committed against his wife. The writer is interested in exploring more about domestic violence, especially in terms of behavior because domestic violence is something that still often happens in the environment today. In this study, the author intends to find out the behavior of domestic violence as reflected in Nicholas Spark's Safe Haven against the female character which is Katie. To answer the research problem, the writer uses a qualitative descriptive method and conducts a library research study. The data are in the form of dialogues and narrations. In this thesis, the writer applies the Feminism Approach in order to look at the relationship between literary works and the elements of feminism that exist in life. Furthermore, this thesis uses McCue's theory of domestic violence, where domestic violence can be observed through behavior. The results of this analysis shows there are three behaviors of domestic violence found in the Safe Haven novel experienced by the female character which is Katie. At emotional abuse, the perpetrator often said things that can intimidate and manipulate the victim. At sexual abuse, perpetrators engage in sexual activity without considering the victim and only concerned with their own satisfaction. At physical abuse, the perpetrator carries out physical activities that can injure or cause bruising and pain on the victim's body.
