Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether students’ speaking ability increased significantly after implementing the storytelling technique at SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung. This study used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. This research was composed of appropriate data collection techniques, such as pre-and post-testing. This research procedure was initiated with a pretest to know the students’ speaking ability before treatment. The treatment is accomplished after the pretest to teach students how to speak through storytelling, and finally, a posttest to determine the students’ speaking ability after treatment. To ensure the data was valid, the researcher measured the normality and reliability of the test. It was found that the data distributed was normal and reliable. The formulated hypothesis was tested using a t-test with the IBM SPSS 20 application. The t-test was used to examine whether there was a significant increase between the pretest and posttest. The findings showed increased students’ speaking ability after implementing the storytelling technique. The test results increased significantly as the mean score was 63,93 in the pretest and 79,18 in the post-test. The result of the t-test also showed that the significance (2-tailed) was 0.000 (p < 0.05). The null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Students’ speaking abilities in the tenth-grade classes at SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung increased due to the implementation of the Storytelling Technique. The teacher could use storytelling as an alternative technique to make students interested in learning speaking.
