Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether there was a significant effect from the use of English songs to improve students’ listening skills in the eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Bandarlampung. The method used to conduct the study was a quasi-experimental design with a simple random sampling technique. The sample class was XI MIA 1 as experimental class and XI IIS 1 as control class. The teaching method using English songs in teaching listening has been given to the experimental class. On the contrary, the conventional teaching by using a regular monologue has been given to students in the control class. The instrument that has been used in this research was a listening cloze test in the form of pre-test and post-test. This research proves that using songs as a method in delivering lessons has a significant effect on improving students' listening skills. This statement is also strengthened by statistical calculations using SPSS version 17. Significant effects on students’ abilities can be seen from the results of the calculations that the post-test scores in the experimental class are higher than those in the control class. The t-test stated significant t-count was 6.631 with the significant level of 5% was 2.030. Whereas the p-value was .000 which lower than the t table at a significant level of 5%. In conclusion, the null hypothesis (H?) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H?) was accepted. In conclusion, there was an effect of using English songs in improving student’s listening skill at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung.
