Abstract

ABSTRACT The Representations of Social Discrimination Toward Homosexual Character in Moonlight Movie by Barry Jenkins Kurnia Wigati 16111017 This study aims to describe the representation of social discrimination toward homosexual character in Moonlight movie presented by the African-American people societies. The hypothesis of this study is that the movie is not only a medium of entertainment but also as a medium for conveying messages, knowledge and education. Film as the most common media among public and being one of the most popular is important to be the object of research, because it is enjoyed by most people around the world. With regard to social discrimination, movies function as educational media and are able to influence the audience's perception of discrimination that occurs in the film. By using Stuart Hall's representation framework, this research uncovers the actors and objects of social discrimination itself. To examine the conflict of the homosexual character portrayed in the movie, the writer uses qualitative research and the technique of data analysis uses three approaches of representations by Stuart Hall. In the analysis and discussion through Hall’s theory of representation will be analyzed from scenesthat describe the discrimination, violence against homosexual character verbally and non-verbally, so the message in the movie can be delivered. The writer concludes that social discrimination against homosexual identity still exists. Discrimination in this movie is represented in various forms such as stereotype, intimidation, sexual harassment, being isolated, being abandoned, exploitation, physical bullying and unfair treatment from the surroundings that were done verbally, physically, and mentally. What happened to Chiron whose identity is gay becoming one of the reasons in supporting discrimination
