Abstract

Political sarcasm can be delivered by others who understand politics and able to express critics or satirical content related to political field, such as stand-up comedians or simply comedians. In performing stand-up comedy, the comedians usually recite a group of humorous stories, jokes and one-liners typically called a monologue, routine or act and in delivering humorous stories, most of the performers will express their own language style and topic. Thus, this research investigated the political sarcasms found in “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and reveal the purpose of its political sarcasm. Here, the writer applied critical discourse study grounded on Fairclough’s theory and used qualitative method. The findings show that in the textual dimension, it shows that Noah mostly used metonymy in delivering his statements for both entertainment and referring the situation to the audience purposes. Moreover, on the interpretation dimension, it can be noticed that through the Daily Show program, Noah has the high level of political awareness which can be seen from the way he is delivering political sarcasm. Here, Noah is showing his political sarcasm for several purposes, they are; the sarcasm as evaluation, persuasive aspect and sophistication. Lastly, related to the social practice or the power behind discourse, the writer found that Trevor has purpose in delivering his political sarcasm to the audience in order to lure the critical thinking of society based on what they see and heard on media. Moreover, Noah also wants show them that politics can be very insane and unpredictable (through the actions that Trump done).
