Abstract

There are many types of learning media used by teachers to support the teaching and learning process, one of them is video. The use of media aims to assist teachers in explaining the material and attracting students' attention. For some students, the use of video is a medium that really helps them in understanding the lesson. However, some students also feel disturbed and uncomfortable in using video as a medium. Hence, this thesis aims to find out about those different student’ perception on the use of video in learning English. In this study, the researcher investigated two research questions; 1) to investigate students’ perception on the use of video to teach English subject in Vocational High School, and 2) find out what the benefit of the use of video for English learning as perceived by students. To answers those research questions, the researcher used qualitative method in this study. The instruments were used were questionnaire and interview. The researcher took the data from two classes, which were XI KI I and XI KI III of SMK SMTI Bandarlampung. The research findings showed that students had positive perception on the use of video as medium in learning and teaching English subject, although they found the difficulties when using the video. Beside that, the students agreed and strongly agreed that video gave the positive effects to them, such as the increasing of motivation in learning, acquiring a lot of new vocabularies, knowing more about how to pronounce the word correctly, and being motivated so they do not get bored quickly in learning English.
