Abstract

BSTRACT There are a lot of things going on from the beginning when Joko Widodo sits as President of Indonesia; however, the beginning of 2020 has become the hardest one due to the Coronavirus outbreak hitting Indonesia since March, 2020. Thus, the representation of Jokowi and his responds to the Coronavirus outbreak in media coverage is interesting to discuss. Therefore, the researcher aims to analyze how Jokowi is represented in The Jakarta Post about the ongoing issue of Coronavirus. The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative. The researcher uses The Jakarta Post as the data source of the research because The Jakarta Post is a leading English language daily newspaper which is suitable for this research. This research uses the theory proposed by Fairclough (1995) which means the analysis applies the three-dimensional theory that covers description, interpretation, and explanation. The result of the research shows that in the description, the most used subcategories of textual analysis is active and passive voice, followed by modality. For the rest subcategories which are over lexicalization and figurative language are not found in the articles that precisely represent Jokowi as the President. Moreover, for the intertextuality, it can be concluded that the way the author writes about Jokowi is by showing how upset he is to the members of the Cabinet. The words that are used to describe Jokowi’s emotions are considered hyperbole in order to deliver massive disappointment that Jokowi feels, so that the readers are able to understand that the progress in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic becomes Jokowi’s major concerns in his presidency. The last, is about explanation, which concludes that the representation of Jokowi in The Jakarta Post perspective is majorly positive because The Jakarta Post most likely uses active sentences which means Jokowi becomes the center of attention while presenting Coronavirus
