Abstract

Prepositional phrase is formed by preposition, noun and pronoun and it shows a relationship between its object and other sentences which conveys the meaning of position, direction, time or other abstraction. Thus, related to prepositional phrase, the writer through this research examined the functions of prepositional phrase that can be found in the selected Tempo English Sport articles. In conducting the research, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and using Frank’s theory (1972) of prepositional phrase function. As the result of the research, the writer found that from the total of three selected articles, there are 41 data found in total which are consist of 14 data that has adjectival function and 27 data in total related to the adverbial function. As in the adjectival function, the writer noticed that most of the prepositional phrases are modifying noun phrase instead of just a noun and in the adverbial function, the writer found that most of the prepositional phrases are not only modifying verbs, but also adjectives. In addition, the writer also assumed that the adverbial functions more appear than adjectival functions since the adverbial function basically can modify not only verbs, but also adjectives and adverbs. Unfortunately, the adjectival function of the prepositional phrase only able to change noun or noun phrase.
