Abstract

Indonesian sovereignty over Papua has been disputed by international communities since its independence. The concerns are to cover various aspects ranging from marginalization, discrimination, failure of development, and referendum that lead to the annexation of Papua. This draws attention not only to the local media but also to the international ones to write news about it. Therefore, this study is aimed to comprehend the representational meanings of the adjectival, noun, and verbal collocates used by The Guardian Newspaper, one of the international media, in reporting the issues in Papua and exposing the underlying ideology behind the representation. To analyze the data, the researcher applied Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) developed by Fairclough known as three-dimensional model and used a Corpus Linguistics tool namely Sketch Engine to help the researcher get the data of analysis. Moreover, the current study employed a qualitative approach to get an in-depth understanding. The data were collected from articles written and published by The Guardian Newspaper between 1999 to 2019. The result of the analysis shows that Papua is represented negatively through the usage of adjectival, noun, and verbal collocates used by The Guardian News. Papua and its people are mostly associated with the adjective, noun, and verb that have negative semantic prosody such as Indonesian-controlled, refugee, and colonize. In addition, The Guardian News consistently writes news related to Papua with the association of separatist movement, racial discrimination, and human right abuses. The researcher also finds out that The Guardian attempts to invite its readers to give attention towards the issues in Papua by emphasizing Papua as the victim of the social events.
