Abstract

ABSTRACT An Analysis of Illocutionary Act toward Donald Trump’s Coronavirus Outbreak Speech Hervina Nurika 1611081 Speech acts conveyed by politicians during a political speech can give different meanings to the hearers. Politicians used selected devices in order to convince the public and to be able to communicate directly with them. By analyzing the speech acts produced by the politicians, language use and the characteristic of political leaders can be discovered, especially in speech. Speech is the verbal delivery of ideas, thoughts or information and goals, from the speaker to another person or listener. The researcher observing the Illocutionary of Donald Trump Corona Virus Outbreak Speech on March 11, 2020. In his speech Donald Trump talked that he is instructing the Small Business Administration to exercise available authority to provide capital and liquidity to firms affected by the coronavirus and it will help the societies. The scope of this researcher is focusing on analyzing the illocutionary of speech act on the Donald Trump speech. The approach of this study is pragmatic approach. In this study the researcher also applied theory of speech act by J.L Austin (1962) and Searle (1969). There are 26 illocutionary that is found in Donald Trump speech. After the researcher analyzed the data the researcher found that the most dominant type of illocutionary act which used by Donald Trump was assertive which contains 11 data. The second dominant type of illocutionary was commissive act it had 8. The third dominant type is directive it had 7, the forth dominant is declaration it had 2 data and the last dominant type of illocutionary is expressive act it had 1 data. The whole types of illocutionary act which occur in this conversation are averagely same so five types of illocutionary acts occur in this data analysis. However, the types of assertive are more dominant in this research. The speaker used assertive because the speaker wants to give a fact about the conditions of this pandemic.
