Abstract

This study aims to explain how depression is depicted in The Girl on The Train Novel by Paula Hawkins. Depression is a condition where people may get excessive sadness and certain bad condition such lack of sleep until thought to die. The study examines the main character in the novel because the novel is describing how the main character suffers depression as the effect of her failure on her past marriage. In this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method and theory of depression by Tirto Jiwo. The results of this study show that there are nine symptom of depression which suffered by Rachel Watson: (1) Overthinking and Excessive Sadness, (2) Drinking Habitual As The Result of Sadness, (3) Insomnia, (4) Lack of Sleep, (5) Feeling Worthless, (6) Feeling Irritable, (7) Thought to Die, (8) Upset, and (9) Feeling Pain.
