Abstract

This thesis examines the types Mood and Modality realized in Jokowi’s Inauguration Speech 2019. By seeing on how people used the mood and modality in the clauses that they exchange with each other we can see the point of view of the speaker or ideology, attitude and judgment and how speech is structured to build social relationship between the speaker and the audience. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. While documentation used as the method of collecting data. This research analyzed by using Hallidayan SFL theory (2014). The research object limited on the mood and modality analysis of the clause as exchange in the Jokowi’s inauguration speech. The findings show that from 95 total of clauses in the speech, the dominant clause used is declarative clauses with the total frequency are 92 times. Which means Jokowi’s speech tend to persuade or exchange audience’s point of view and to show or express speaker’s by giving information. While the modality commonly used is modulation – obligation, where the speaker expresses something required to do. Modulation – obligation means something that cannot be negotiated. The dominant of the use of modulation in his speech is to persuade audiences to take an action given together. The results of this study are expected to help the speaker to improve in delivering speech, also help readers how to make better speech.
