Abstract

This research focused on analysing the types and meaning of figurative language in poetry anthology book written by English Literature students. The researcher applied Leech theory (1969 & 1981) which functioned to categorize the types and meaning of figurative language. Besides, this research also adopted qualitative method, since the analysis dealt with words instead of numbers. The results of the analysis showed that there are eight types of figurative language occurred in anthology book. Those are personification, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, oxymoron, irony, litotes, and metonymy. Additionally, the dominant types of figurative language is personification. Then, there are six types of meaning in figurative language found in the anthology book. Those are connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, reflected meaning, collocative meaning, affective meaning, and thematic meaning. In addition, the result showed that by using figurative language in writing a poem, the author aimed to enrich the aestatetic value within the poem.
