Abstract

Listening is one of the important elements in learning a language since when someone lacks of listening comprehension, the communication becomes ineffective. Also, the common problems faced by learners are related to hearing sounds, intonation and stress and mostly, accents. In learning English for example, learners commonly make mistakes in recognizing unfamiliar sounds when speaker mentioned some words, especially when English is not as their first language (mother tongue). Thus, in this research, the writer is interested in describing kinds of part of speech that cannot be identified by English Literature students of Universitas Teknokrat. Further, in doing the analysis, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and proposed Roach, (1998) theory. As the result of this analysis, the writer finds out that there are two problems dealt by the participants first, they are unable to detect words pronounced or uttered by the speaker in the video and secondly, participants are unable to recognize some words uttered by the speaker. In the matter of unrecognized words, participants are lack of knowledge and awareness in recognizing some words pronounced by the speaker. However, the problem of undetected words happens when the speaker mentioned those words very fast and almost without using stress so that the words are blended in among the sentences as the speaker speaks.
