Abstract
This research is a Critical Discourse Analysis study (CDA) which explores how The Jakarta Post, CNN, and Daily Mail online newspapers represented a case of shooting happened ahead of Asian Games by Indonesian police. The study examines linguistic aspects and discourse practices in the way they give the information to the society. For its framework of analysis, this research focuses on two levels of Three- Dimensional model from Fairclough (1995) about Critical Discourse Analysis. Active or Passive voice, naming, and modality will be used to examine linguistic aspect in the research. The researcher used speech reporting about journalist quotation from Fairclough (1992). This research reveals that The Jakarta Post (TJP), CNN, and Daily Mail newspapers had tendency to give negative image of police in the case of shooting happened ahead of Asian Games by Indonesian police. In the use of active and passive voice, all the newspapers; TJP, CNN, and Daily Mail newspapers were mostly written in active voice. It indicated that they wanted to make the agents of the particular actions can be seen as clear as they are. Then in naming, both TJP and CNN, they decided to name people individually than collectively. But, in Daily Mail, the researcher found the journalist decided to name people in collectively. The indirect quotation in TJP and CNN newspaper were the most frequent quotation presented in the newspaper. Meanwhile, in Daily Mail free-indirect quotation was mostly presented in the newspaper.
