Abstract

This research analyzed the figurative language that women and men comedians used in their materials of stand-up comedy. The writer raises this topic because of the interest in observing women and men comedians primarily in the differences in using figurative language. This research aims to investigate the figurative language produced by women and men comedians. The theory which is adopted in this thesis is the types of figurative language proposed by Keraf (2009). For completing this thesis, the writer used qualitative method. The data are taken from the utterances of six videos comedians in Laugh Factory show that shown 29 figurative language expressions from women comedians and 30 figurative language expressions from the men comedians. As the data resulted, the significant range in the total number of types of figurative language produced by women and men comedians showed that the most dominant of type of figurative language is repetition. This research concluded that women and men comedians had difference in using figurative language, women comedians tend use sentence repetition, use connective word “as” and “seem” to compare two things, and make exaggeration sentence use numerical hyperbole and phrasal hyperbole, while men comedians tend use word repetition, use connective word “like” to compare two things, and make exaggeration sentence use phrasal hyperbole.
