Abstract

The aim of the study is to find the symptoms and the types of bipolar disorder in Marya’s character seen in a novel entitled Madness: A Bipolar Life by Marya Hornbacher. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It is concerned with the description data in the form dialogues, narration, and statement about bipolar disorder in Madness: A Bipolar Life Novel. Furthermore, in this research, the writer used the psychological approach. The theory applied in this research is theory of bipolar disorder taken from Living with Bipolar Disorder book (2008). Three symptoms of bipolar disorder are mania, hypomania, and depression. There are 3 types of bipolar disorder including Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymia, and bipolar NOS (Not otherwise specified). Upon completed the research for the thesis, writer arrived at the conclusion that Madness: A Bipolar Life by Marya Hornbacher describes mania and depression symptoms, and has bipolar disorder type I. Mania symptoms as reflected in Marya’s character are full energy, more talkative, decreased need for sleep, easily to criticize other, abnormal irritability, easy to spend a lot of money, hyper sex, and hallucination. For depression symptoms including, change appetite, low energy, and suicide idea.
