Abstract

This research aims to discuss the psychopath symptoms of a major character, Patrick Bateman, a business man character who can manipulate his charm and kindness to other people, he also always lies and kills people to get his satisfactions. The writer uses American Psycho novel, psychological approach, and psychopathic personality theory. The writer uses qualitative research and library research which tries to explain about psychopathic personality disorder’s symptoms in Bateman’s character. The results of this study is, the major character from American Psycho novel is a psychopath. It can be seen from the narration and the dialogue in the novel. The writer takes 6 symptoms from the theory, The Mask of Sanity book, there are superficial charm and good intelligence, absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking, unreliability, lack of remorse or shame, inadequately motivated antisocial behavior, and incapacity for love, because only 6 symptoms that appear in the main character, Patrick Bateman from American Psycho novel.
