Abstract

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is one of the series novels by J. K. Rowling. It is chosen as the object of this research. the reflection of defense mechanisms is the main theme in this research. The focus of this analysis are to explain about the defense mechanisms and find the factor influence as reflected in Hermione Granger’s character portrayed in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows novel. To support this analysis the writer used some theories and an approach. The theories are about the Freudian defense mechanisms theory and applies psychoanalytic approach. Furthermore, library research was applies to collect the data, and descriptive qualitative method was employed to analysis the idea. The analysis show that even though Hermione did not always appeared in every chapter, she showed the existence of defense mechanisms that occured in the setting of time, place and atmosphere that are limited in a story. It can be happened because of each character has a different characteristics and brings a different path to the story.
