Abstract

This study discusses a short story, entitled The Snows of Kilimanjaro, written by Ernest Hemingway in 1936. The writer focuses on analyzing the American society who holds Hedonism. The objective of this research is to reveal and explain Hedonism of American society through the characters’ lifestyle in The Snows of Kilimanjaro short story by Ernest Hemingway. In order to achieve the research objective, the writer applied qualitative method since the writer gave detailed description and explanation in the research. Moreover, the writer applies sociological approach and hedonism theory. The data source is short story entitled The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1936) by Ernest Hemingway. The writer focuses analyzing two main characters in the story, they are Harry and Helen. Result of the analysis to answer the research question shows that from seven kinds of hedonism, there are five kinds that are found in the short story: Folk Hedonism, Value Hedonism, Motivational Hedonism, Hedonistic Egoism and Hedonistic Utilitarianism. In short, Harry holds Folk Hedonism, Value Hedonism, Motivational Hedonism and Hedonistic Egoism which tends to give bad impact on himself and people around him. Meanwhile, Helen holds Folk Hedonism and Hedonistic Utilitarianism which tends to give good impact on herself and people around her.
