Abstract

The aim of this work is to show the characteristics and the causes of antisocial personality disorder in Ove as the main character accurately that the writer already found in the novel. To conduct this research, the writer applied psychological approach and used the personality disorder theory from the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-IV and also Antisocial Personality Disorder: Treatment, Management and Prevention written by Professor Connor Dugan et al. The writer tried to analyze the main character’s personality. The writer applied library research and qualitative method by collecting, reading, and analyzing the data relates to the research. The data is taken from the narrations, dialogues, and quotations of the novel which are formulated and selected to deal with the topic on the thesis. The writer collected the data by reading the data comprehensively and identifying to particular parts in the novel, such as the dialogs which are considered important for the analysis. The results of this research show that Ove’s antisocial personality disorder is indicated by his actions and behaviors which show the characteristics of antisocial personality disorder. Ove shows five out of seven characteristics of antisocial personality disorder, which are failure to conform to social norms, impulsivity, irritability and aggressiveness, reckless disregard for safety of self and others, and lack of remorse. Ove’s antisocial personality disorder is caused by his peers, who are his parents, his bosses, co-workers, and some people that he met in the past.
