Abstract

This thesis investigated politeness principle in a university classroom. The aim of this research was to find out the types and functions of politeness principle produced by Christina Tosi as guest lecturer and Michael Brenner as Harvard lecturer in Harvard science and cooking lecture series. The writer applied the theory and concept of politeness principle proposed by Leech. In collecting the data, the writer used qualitative method. The findings of this research show that there are seven classification of politeness principles found; they are tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, obligation maxim of S to O, agreement maxim, opinion- reticence maxim and sympathy maxim. From those seven classification of politeness principle, the writer found that the most dominant politeness principle used by the lecturers is tact maxim which mostly performed by Harvard lecturer in order to manage and control the activities and the students in the classroom, meanwhile the other maxims which highly perform in this lecture series are opinion reticence, generosity maxim, agreement maxim, and approbation maxim, Those maxim mostly performed by the guest lecturer. The use of politeness maxim created interactive learning process and positive environment.
